Promoting, encouraging and nurturing new songwriting in Scotland

Burns and Rivers

Burns and Rivers is a series of songwriting workshops in schools which encourage the writing of songs inspired by local water and the natural environment.

It is the only songwriting project of it's kind in Scotland which offers young people in rural and urban areas the opportunity to learn songwriting skills and to express their relationship with their environment through song.

Burns and Rivers has the following aims:

  • developing students' creative abilities
  • developing awareness of the local environment
  • increasing knowledge of the process of songwriting
  • developing a greater knowledge of the work of Robert Burns

Schools

  • In 2005, Burns & Rivers, was piloted in schools in Dumfries and Galloway and Glasgow. Over 400 pupils took part performing in concerts and producing 2 CDs of brand new songs.
  • In 2007, Burns & Rivers is going out around Scotland. Schools in Dumfries and Galloway, Glasgow and the Scottish Borders. We are looking to engage a further 2 local authorities in the project.

Resources pack

  • Burnsong has been working with music education professionals and environmentalists to develop our Burns & Resources pack which provides guidance and activities for schools and tutors who wish to deliver the project. We plan to make this pack available to schools around Scotland.
